Benchmarking is the practice of regularly comparing various performance metrics in order to continually improve performance. A benchmark is the standard by which performance is measured.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The term benchmarking is used broadly in business, often to describe the process of measuring one thing against another to establish a standard acceptable value. But the true definition is a bit more technical.<\/p>\n<p>With true benchmarking, you aren\u2019t just comparing metrics to establish a standard; you\u2019re comparing the processes\u00a0<em>behind\u00a0<\/em>the measurements to continually improve performance. Organizations use benchmarking to establish best practices and operate at peak performance.<\/p>\n<h2>What metrics should you measure with benchmarking?<\/h2>\n<p>You could be measuring any number of metrics. Your business model determines which metrics are most important for your organization.<\/p>\n<p>Common benchmarked metrics include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearvoice.com\/resources\/customer-retention-strategies\/\">Customer retention<\/a><\/li>\n<li>New business<\/li>\n<li>Client engagement<\/li>\n<li>Social media reach<\/li>\n<li>Productivity<\/li>\n<li>Customer satisfaction<\/li>\n<li>Market share<\/li>\n<li>Time<\/li>\n<li>Sales<\/li>\n<li>Expenses<\/li>\n<li>Revenue<\/li>\n<li>Profit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Benchmarking typically follows this process:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Step 1<\/strong>: Plan the project. Identify the metric you wish to benchmark and note your organization\u2019s current standing in regard to that metric. Define the processes your organization uses to achieve the current level of performance, and identify competitors that are performing better than your organization.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 2<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearvoice.com\/resources\/what-is-a-competitive-analysis\/\">Research your competitor\u2019s processes<\/a>. Find out what processes your competitors are using that allow them to perform better than your organization. You might search for information online, interview the competitors\u2019 workers, or interview competitors\u2019 clients.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 3<\/strong>: Compare your processes to your competitors&#8217;. Look for gaps between your organization\u2019s performance and your competitors\u2019 performances, and identify differences in processes that could cause those gaps.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 4<\/strong>: Revise your processes. Implement the best practices of your competitors that are most likely to close the performance gap.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 5<\/strong>: Measure the results and adjust as needed. Track your organization\u2019s progress over time and adjust processes until you\u2019re able to match or exceed the best practice benchmarks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearvoice.com\/resources\/why-you-need-keyword-benchmarking-in-your-seo-strategy\/\">Benchmarking<\/a> can be categorized in any number of ways, but you\u2019ll generally benchmark\u00a0internally\u00a0or\u00a0externally.<\/p>\n<p>Internal benchmarking measures current performance between different groups (or individuals) within your organization. External benchmarking measures your organization\u2019s performance against the performance of your industry\u2019s top competitors.<\/p>\n<h2>Common uses for benchmarking:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Grow your online presence by comparing social media marketing tactics against your top competitors.<\/li>\n<li>Increase new business by comparing your marketing strategies against your competitors.<\/li>\n<li>Increase market share by comparing marketing conversion methods against your top competitors.<\/li>\n<li>Reduce output times at one facility by benchmarking production processes against another facility.<\/li>\n<li>Increase customer satisfaction by comparing customer service workflows and response times with your competitors.<\/li>\n<li>Decrease expenses by comparing resources with competitors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is no end to the number of metrics you can benchmark and the improvements you can make in your business through the process of benchmarking.<\/p>\n<h2>Examples of benchmarking:<\/h2>\n<p>You can use benchmarking to increase your Google ranking for competitive keywords.\u00a0Compare your content marketing strategy\u00a0with a competitor who is ranking higher than your organization for keywords on Google.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearvoice.com\/resources\/earned-media\/\">See what your competitor is doing differently<\/a> and attempt to replicate their success by adopting their processes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearvoice.com\/resources\/hands-method-competitive-content-analysis\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clearvoice.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Benchmarking-Ss1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"820\" height=\"635\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Airlines use benchmarking to improve their response times to customer inquiries.
