You attempt to access a website, blog, or article, and the accompanying infographic, photo, or other artwork fails to load. Instead, you\u2019re treated to a brief, two- or three-word text sentence describing the image.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome to the world of web accessibility and its mainstay, the alternative text. Known as \u201calt text,\u201d and sometimes as \u201calt tags\u201d or \u201calt descriptions,\u201d this tool provides users with descriptive, written content, as an alternative to visuals.<\/p>\n<h2>Why use alternative text?<\/h2>\n<p>Alternative text serves the following functions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is read by text-oriented screen readers, providing image&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearvoice.com\/resources\/accessible-content\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accessibility to the visually impaired<\/a><\/li>\n<li>It steps in if an image file fails to download, or if a user doesn\u2019t want to view the image<\/li>\n<li>When used with the right keyword, it can positively impact a website\u2019s search engine results page ranking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Alt text best practices<\/h2>\n<p>The basic rules when it comes to creating alternative text are: <a href=\"https:\/\/accessibility.huit.harvard.edu\/describe-content-images\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Be brief and be bright<\/a>. Effective alternative text content must be highly descriptive. And it must be short as in, less than 125 characters.<\/p>\n<p>Well-crafted alternative text with judicious use of keywords can also help improve your SERP ranking. But be wary of keyword overuse. You don\u2019t want to trigger spammy red flags.<\/p>\n<h2>Alt text examples<\/h2>\n<p>Finally, there are a few ways to input alternative text.
