Idioms are common phrases that have meaning as a whole, rather than just being the sum of its words. We\u2019ve all heard them before, but how often do we write them or see them written?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not unusual to see these phrases misspelled in writing because people have only ever heard them.<\/p>\n

10 common phrases that are often misspelled<\/h2>\n

Here are 10 of the most commonly misspelled English phrases and their correct uses so that you won\u2019t keep making the same mistakes<\/a> in your writing.<\/p>\n

\"10<\/p>\n

1. Piqued my interest<\/h3>\n

To\u00a0pique\u00a0means\u00a0to excite<\/strong>. To\u00a0peek\u00a0means\u00a0to look quickly<\/strong>, and to\u00a0peak\u00a0means\u00a0to reach the top<\/strong>. Looking at those definitions side by side, it only makes sense that the phrase \u201cpiqued my interest\u201d uses\u00a0pique<\/em>\u00a0instead of either of its homophones. If something piques your interest, it excites you.<\/p>\n

2. Complete 180<\/h3>\n

When people want to say that someone or something has changed completely, they sometimes say that it made a \u201ccomplete\u00a0360<\/em>.\u201d However, this would mean that the person or thing has returned to its original position (because a circle is 360 degrees). The correct phrase is \u201ccomplete 180,\u201d meaning that someone ended up on the opposite side of a circle, which suggests that they changed completely.<\/p>\n

3. For all intents and purposes<\/h3>\n

This is used to show the overall utility of what you\u2019re saying. It is often miswritten as \u201cfor all\u00a0intensive<\/em> purposes,\u201d which would merely suggest that what you\u2019re saying is useful only for the most intense purposes. When words sound similar<\/a> but are spelled completely differently, it can be a little tricky.<\/p>\n

4. Bated breath<\/h3>\n

If you\u2019re waiting with\u00a0bated\u00a0breath, your \u201cbreath\u201d is\u00a0moderated or restrained<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 you\u2019re waiting with great anticipation. If your breath is\u00a0baited<\/em>, however\u2026 honestly, I\u2019m not sure what you\u2019re doing, unless you\u2019re fishing.<\/p>\n

5. One and the same<\/h3>\n

As we can see from its redundant phrasing, this phrase means that two things are identical. People often mistakenly say \u201cone\u00a0in<\/em>\u00a0the same,\u201d which is not redundant but otherwise makes no sense.<\/p>\n

6. Dog eat dog<\/h3>\n

This phrase is often used when something is particularly brutal or to suggest that a situation is every man for himself. Though the oft-misheard \u201cdoggy dog<\/em>\u201d is an infinitely cuter image, it doesn\u2019t nearly convey the message you\u2019re intending.<\/p>\n

7. Whet your appetite<\/h3>\n

Like pique,\u00a0whet\u00a0means\u00a0to sharpen or stimulate<\/strong>. If something\u00a0whets<\/em>\u00a0your appetite, it stimulates your desire for more. On the other hand, if something\u00a0wets<\/em>\u00a0your appetite it\u2026 dumps water on it? What would that mean for your appetite? Like most of these mistaken phrases, this version is nonsensical.<\/p>\n

8. Pore over<\/h3>\n

Similar to the pique\/peek\/peak debacle, this is merely a case of misused homophones. To\u00a0pore\u00a0means\u00a0to study intently<\/strong>. To\u00a0pour\u00a0means\u00a0to send (a liquid) flowing from one place to another<\/strong>. Knowing this, it makes sense to\u00a0pore over<\/em>\u00a0a book or some study materials.\u00a0Pour over<\/em>\u00a0should only be used for coffee.<\/p>\n

9. Home in<\/h3>\n

To \u201chome in\u201d means to advance toward a goal and suggests that you\u2019re getting closer. It is often heard as \u201chone<\/em>\u00a0in,\u201d but this is incorrect. To\u00a0hone\u00a0means\u00a0to fine-tune or sharpen<\/strong>, as you would a skill or a craft. In the context of closing in on a goal, it doesn\u2019t really make sense.<\/p>\n

\"10<\/h3>\n

10. Another think coming<\/h3>\n

This one was new to me in my research for this article. People generally say \u201canother thing<\/em>\u00a0coming,\u201d which does still make sense. However, this idiom comes from a larger phrase: \u201cIf that\u2019s what you think, then you\u2019ve got another think coming.\u201d When you look at it this way, it makes sense to use\u00a0think<\/em>\u00a0when your intent is that someone is about to rethink their earlier assertion.<\/p>\n
